Theatrical, raw and undeniably iconic - a portrait that defined an era of alternative music.
Photographed for Rolling Stone in 1998 during Placebo’s Australian tour, this rare work is now available to collectors in a strictly limited edition of 20 - each hand-signed, numbered and produced to museum standards on archival Hahnemühle fine art paper.
Created in my North Adelaide home - the same setting as the Kylie Minogue and Thom Yorke sessions - the shoot came together spontaneously when the band arrived unannounced, unconfirmed by the magazine or the label. That sense of unpredictability shaped the image.
Brian brought a hospital gown - as you do - which paired perfectly with my housemate’s bathroom. One housemate, nursing a hangover, wandered out to find Brian quietly occupying his shower. The result is an image that feels theatrical, rebellious and completely of its time.
This portrait went on to feature in major exhibitions across Australia and Europe - and remains widely shared through Placebo’s global fanbase.
